For today’s prompt, write a story about someone experiencing something for the first time.
Remember: These prompts are just starting points; you have the freedom to go wherever your flash of inspiration takes you.
(Note: If you run into any issues with posting your story, please just send me an e-mail at mrichard@aimmedia.com with the subject line: Flash Fiction Challenge Commenting Issue.)
Here’s my attempt at a story about a first experience:
Baby’s First Snow
After the hullabaloo of digging the sled out of the garage and stuffing the baby into her snowsuit, the experience of pulling her around in the 25-degree weather was…underwhelming.
“I don’t think she’s impressed,” Colin said.
The baby was sitting upright, her pink face a mask of displeasure. The suit was so puffy she couldn’t even turn her head or move her limbs well. Amanda took a few photos on her phone, texting them to the family group chat.
“It’s more for us than her,” Amanda said.
“Maybe we should—” Colin slipped, landing ass-first in the snow.
The baby burst into giggles. Colin and Amanda stared at each other, mouths agape.
“Have you ever heard her do that before?” Amanda asked.
“No!”
“Her first laugh!”
Both parents scrambled to crouch in front of the little plastic sled, voices going squeaky. The baby’s face scrunched and she let out a grump yowl.
“Moment over,” Colin said.
“Let’s go back in,” Amanda said. “It’s too freaking cold out here.”
