For today’s prompt, write a story about someone following in their parent’s footsteps.
Remember: These prompts are just starting points; you have the freedom to go wherever your flash of inspiration takes you.
(Note: If you run into any issues with posting your story, please just send me an e-mail at mrichard@aimmedia.com with the subject line: Flash Fiction Challenge Commenting Issue.)
Here’s my attempt at a story where someone is following in their parent’s footsteps:
The Baker’s Daughter
For three months after her mother passed away, every batch of cookies she made burned horribly. She couldn’t understand it—she followed their old recipes to the letter, double then triple-checked her oven settings, tried and retried and tried again.
Then, one day—success. Perfectly golden dough, glistening chocolate chips melted to perfection. When she took the first bite, she was transported to a time when she had to stand on a chair to reach the counter, her mother and her swiping bites of raw cookie dough between batches.
The ferocity of her tears surprised her, but they shouldn’t have.
