2024 February Flash Fiction Challenge: Day 6
For today’s prompt, write a story that has the title “The Last Time I Spoke to X.” The ‘X,’ of course, is yours to fill in! Who is your character talking to? What did they say? What happened to make that conversation notable?
Remember: These prompts are just starting points; you have the freedom to go wherever your flash of inspiration takes you.
(Note: If your story gets flagged for review, be patient—we will be releasing comments every few hours throughout the weekdays of this challenge. Our system randomly flags comments for review, so just sit tight and wait for us to set it free! If you run into any other issues with posting your story, please just send me an e-mail at mrichard@aimmedia.com with the subject line: Flash Fiction Challenge Commenting Issue.)
Here’s my attempt at a story based on the title “The Last Time I Spoke to X”:
The Last Time I Spoke to My Therapist
I was crying so hard that my words were unintelligible. She did not interrupt me, her attentive listening face a mask uncracked. She did not offer me a tissue; we were separated by miles and computer screens. “I knew birth would be hard, but I didn’t know it would almost kill me,” I said eventually. She nodded kindly. We planned for what my postpartum self-care routine would look like until we saw each other next.
“I wanted to let you know that in three months, I will be taking time off for maternity leave,” she said at the session’s end.
