Wednesday Poetry Prompts: 697

For this week’s prompt, take the phrase “(blank) Like (blank),” replace the blanks with a new words or phrases, make the new phrase the title of your poem, and then, write your poem. Possible titles might include: “Poem Like Nobody’s Watching,” “They Like Whatever She Says,” “Falling Like a Leaf,” and/or “Explain It Like I Don’t Know What You’re Talking About.”

Remember: These prompts are springboards to creativity. Use them to expand your possibilities, not limit them.

Here’s my attempt at a Blank Like Blank Poem:

“thinking like i used to,” by Robert Lee Brewer

when i was young i would run up to strangers
and offer them hugs. or at least that’s what i’ve
been told. i don’t remember some myths of my
childhood. like the time i was told to go pee
behind a tree outside and after walking
around one many times asking, “where’s the back
of the tree?” i have to believe i did it

or not believe the people who remember.
but then i don’t remember all the things i
think i remember the way others do and
that makes me wonder if i even recall
stories the same way. or is my mind a game
of telephone where the message gets slightly
distorted over time. then i find myself

thinking like i used to. not sure what to do
with all the faulty thoughts i once thought were true.
