Using Subtlety to Enrich Your Story

Much of what builds great character, undergirds strong plots, and enriches strong scenes is a level of subtlety and nuance beneath the surface of things. The indirect can be as powerful, if not more so, than what is overtly made clear. Subtext is that deeper layer beneath every scene in which you embed meaning, hints, suggestions, and more. Scenes without subtext can feel “thin” as though they’re missing something. With subtext added, you deepen and enrich your writing.
