Plot Twist Story Prompts: The End

Plot twist story prompts aren’t meant for the beginning or the end of stories. Rather, they’re for forcing big and small turns in the anticipated trajectory of a story. This is to make it more interesting for the readers and writers alike.

Each week, I’ll provide a new prompt to help twist your story. Find last week’s prompt, Cutting Losses, here.

Plot Twist Story Prompts: The End

For today’s prompt, have your characters face the end of something. Maybe it’s the end of a relationship. Or the end of a competition. Or the end of a test of some type. Or maybe your character is facing the end of the world.

(Why It’s Fun to Write About What Happens After the World’s Been Saved.)

While something is coming to an end, the story must continue on, and your characters will have to deal with the fallout. Maybe something prematurely ended, and your character wasn’t prepared for it. Maybe the thing that ended started a whole new set of circumstances going.

Another angle to consider is that maybe your character considers the thing that ended as a good thing, and they’re getting their happily ever after. Only, there wouldn’t be a story to tell if that were the case. So, of course, what is going to go wrong? What is still unresolved? That’s the fun of pushing past The End.

So have a character face the end of something, and see what happens next.

Have you hit a wall on your work-in-progress? Maybe you know where you want your characters to end up, but don’t know how to get them there. Or, the story feels a little stale but you still believe in it. Adding a plot twist might be just the solution.
