Writer’s Digest 93rd Annual Competition Rhyming Poetry First Place Winner: “Inexorable”
Congratulations to Sarah Costin, first-place winner in the Rhyming Poetry category of the 93rd Annual Writer’s Digest Writing Competition. Here’s her winning poem, “Inexorable.”
Inexorable
by Sarah Costin
You, with your early Sartre smile, eye the night.
Your cigarette a marker light, its flash divines the wreck,
the surge too strong for sleeping on the deck.
Entanglements grow daily, I wield a futile blade,
bent on slashing lines, the undermines that thrive on my deceit.
You burn them with dispassion, then linger unafraid.
Your fingers trace old patterns in the ash of incomplete.
Freeze flame blazing, you doubt the gods you curse.
Caught in the crossfire, I skirt their stars in verse.
The crash and burn, the conflagration, drops me to my knees.
You, with your early Sartre smile, turn to face the seas.
